about

This is a song about a particular U.S. senator who voted for a bunch of anti-gay legislation and then was busted trying to solicit sex from a man in an airport restroom. The whole story made me wonder why this man and other Conservative gay men hate themselves so much. Straight politicians have no business passing anti-gay laws anyways, but if you’re gay (closeted or otherwise) you should definitely have a little more pride in yourself. This particular senator (you can find out about him, I won’t name him) denies being homosexual, but this isn’t even the first time it was suggested of him. The end of the song suggests to him that he should come clean with the country, admit he likes dudes, and he should start actually respecting himself by being a gay ally in Washington. The very last line, about being “in a position where you can watch our backs” might contain some inuendo. Also I think my favorite line from the album is in this song, because it’s funny, vulgar, and true. Guess which one.

lyrics

You’re making laws, you’re writing legistation
In the U.S. Congress for the whole damn nation
Now we have this little revelation
And how can you hate yourself so much?
You passed an act about descrimination
Preventing it from including orientation
But now you’re under investigation
And how can you hate yourself so much?

Well I can understand if you wanna keep it secret
Trust me, I’ve been there before
But I don’t understand why you’d put in so much effort
Condemning actions that you’re clearly yearning for

You’re going out, and you’re a real go-getter
You tried to fuck cop inside an airport shitter
We all know, so please don’t act so bitter
Yeah how can you hate yourself so much?
In the eighties there was scandal in the congress
It seems you had a little bit of guilty conscience
Nobody accused you but you had a press conference
Yeah how can you hate yourself so much?

Well I can understand if you wanna keep it secret
Trust me, I’ve been there before
But I don’t understand why you’d put in so much effort
Condemning actions that you’re clearly yearning for

You’re sitting in D.C. spending all your energy
Trying to cover your tracks
But if you switched sides now I think that all would be forgiven
You’re in a position where you could watch our backs
