about

So this song is about a pastor called Fred Phelps. He is the founder and head of the Westboro Baptist Church, who’s website is GodHatesFags.com. His group is known for showing up at funerals for soldiers, chanting that dead soldiers are God’s punishment for a nation that tolerates homosexuals. They have a counter on their website celebrating how long Matthew Shepard has been in hell. The drum beat of this song is composed entirely of samples from machinery and other industrial sounds. I had the idea, set out to find the sound clips, and came up with a pretty industrial one-drop beat. I formed a reggae song around it and wrote some dancehall lyrics. I ripped off Bob Marley a little towards the end, tooI put this song second because it fit nicely after the song with Fred Phelps actually talking, and also because the first vocal track of the album starts with the sound of a machine powering up. You know, a Babylon Party Machine.

lyrics

Fred Phelps
A parasite among the livin’
Fred Phelps
You think that you will be forgiven
Fred Phelps
A man that no one can admire
Fred Phelps
So have a taste of your own fire

Well I’m not a Biblical scholar
No I’m not well-rehearsed
You know I can’t quote you a chapter
And I can’t quote you a verse
But before you call me a sinner
Take a lot at yourself first
I think the most hateful man among us
He must surely be the worst
You say that homosexuals
Get AIDS because they’re cursed
And you show up with your posters
Chanting right outside the hearse
All of the hate and lies you’re spreading
They can surely be reversed
But it’s ironic that the wicked man’s
The founder of the church

Fred Phelps
A parasite among the livin’
Fred Phelps
You think that you will be forgiven
Fred Phelps
A man that no one can admire
Fred Phelps
So have a taste of your own fire

So now I’m coming out
Breating fire from my mouth
It’s flowing in your direction
Gonna find what I’m about
You believe in a resurrection
And a sermon on the mount
But I think your interpretation
Is a little bit unsound
You know I don’t believe that Jesus
Ever walked upon the ground
And I don’t believe in God
Or that he sent a prophet down
But the words that you put faith in
Don’t match up to what you’re sayin’
So you’d better to get to prayin’ right now

I shot the pastor
But I swear it was in self-defense
I shot that bastard
But I swear it was in self-defense
